Glenmore 24
Ultra #10 Glenmore 24 24 hours to run as many laps as you can of a 4 mile route at Glenmore along the bank of Loch Morlich & then if you have any time (or energy) left as many laps of a shorter loop around the hayfield to the cheers of the amazing support crews, family, friends & race crew with music blaring! Wow, what can I say, what a weekend & what a race! I managed to finish the race having clocked up 103.20 miles, which got me 2nd in my age category, 7th female & 17th overall (out of 107). I can genuinely say I loved almost every minute, the first 40 miles absolutely flew by with the help of Amanda, who I started chatting to in the first lap & that was us for the next 10! We were counting laps rather
What a weekend!!
What a weekend for Harmeny athletes! *drawing breath* Lyndsay Cockburn came home in first place in the beautiful, but tough, 35 mile Tiree ultramarathon in 4hrs37mins. Iain Hutchison continued his fine run of form with a first Brit over the line at the popular Budapest half marathon in 1.19.29. Our new head Jog Scotland leader Kim Kenny proved yet again what an inspiration she is by completing a mind-boggling 102.99miles at the Glenmore 24hr race, although we wonder how much effort it would have taken to reach 103. Probably quite a lot!!! And Rona Perkins ran 38.9 miles in the Glenmore 12 hours race, her first ultra distance and the longest she has ever ran. In the junior section, Matthew Holden took a prestigious title by winning the junior Great North City Games Run. We had a club outing to The Meadows junior parkrun on

In another fast event the Harmeny ladies were able to pick up 3 medals with David Alexander missing out on a medal by 5 seconds. Well done to everyone who turned up. 2019 West Highland Way Race – some thoughts from Race Director and Harmeny AC member Ian Beattie
My preparation in the weeks leading up to the West Highland Way Race is never the same. This year, the wedding of my stepson Stephen and his fiancée Gillian in the Dominican Republic at the end of May meant that things had to be done a bit earlier than usual. Final race instructions were sent out in early May, with an end May deadline for return. Almost everyone managed to do what was asked, and after the normal chasing of a few stragglers, I had a clean sweep of information with just over two weeks to go to race day. I felt very emotional about the race in the week leading up to it. The Facebook page was full of questions, previous race memories and various other chat, and I didn’t seem able to read any of it without the tears welling up in my

7 Hills of Edinburgh and U12 Superteams
It was another busy weekend for Harmeny with 2 events taking place. First we had 5 teams attending the U12 Superteams event at Scotstoun Stadium. It was a fabulous full day out. All teams of 4 compete in 4 events - Turbo Javelin, Long Jump, 75m sprint and 4x100m relay. Special mention to Ben McDonald who came first out of in 197 boys the long jump with a jump of 4.17m and also got a new club record. And the boys A team also came first out of 50 teams in the relay with a new club record of 59.27s - well done Ben, Dan McGuire, Alex Columbine-Green and Fergus Ross. The girls event was also very exciting and I'm delighted to say that Olivia Faith Muir achieved a new club record for 75m with a run of 11.58s. Well done Olivia and thanks to

Elaines Volunteer Story – Namib Desert Race
RACING THE PLANET – NAMIB DESERT RACE https://namibracevolunteer.home.blog/2019/05/25/elaines-volunteer-adventure/?fbclid=IwAR2n5YzSO1yZeYGkmY9cqu8bI4ezPJSe9Nbzu5XRn1Bf1hYTqt-i3OxVgz8 This is my first attempt at writing a blog! I have done numerous races myself from parkruns to multi day ultras as well as marshal, sweep and first aid at events so I understand to a certain extent what the competitors are going through! I would really love to be able to do a huge adventure race like this but having had previous disc problems with my back, I would not take the risk of carrying a heavy bag for that extended period of time. Anyway I hope that it may be of interest to tell what it is like to be on ‘the other side’ of a 7-day adventure race. I have previously volunteered at the Atacama Crossing in Chile and at the Gobi March in China as my husband Donald competes in the races. We both

VLM2019…..
When I ran my first marathon in 2015 I never thought that I would ever be able to achieve a good for age time for any of the majors. I 2017 I got a ballot place for Berlin Marathon. I ran the race in an incredible 3.51 which as well as good for age for London 2019 was also a good for age time for Chicago 2018. Entered both Chicago 2018 and London 2019. In Chicago I took another minute of my pb to take it to 3.50.26. Race didn’t go quite to plan with hip pain at 14 miles making the second half a struggle. After Chicago I ran the Aviemore half marathon the following week then park run the following week and was able to achieve PBs in both runs. In November with London training I had a discussion with Darren at work
South Queensferry School Cluster Cross Country
Thursday 9th May, 2019 saw Harmeny AC Club to Schools Officer Gordon Robertson and Club Development Officer Graeme Stewart head out to Kirkliston Primary School for their second hosting of a XC event for P6/7 and P1/2 (also known as, 'The Charge of the Weenies'). The course is just over a mile for the older kids, and a shorter, but still hilly course was laid out the same as last year on the parkland at the rear of the school for the wee ones. The school cluster is one those that the Club now supports and delivers Active Schools athletics sessions in, and the number of sessions we run for them will expand again next year. A huge number of kids got to run, including Coach Stewart who led both the boys and girls, 'Charge of the Weenies' after Club Secretary Craig Stewart started the
Mental Health Awareness Week 13-19 May 2019
The topic for 2019 is Body image – how we feel and think about our bodies. Studies have suggested that exercise is one of the most effective ways to improve your mental health. Regular exercise can have a profoundly positive impact on depression, anxiety, ADHD, and more. It also relieves stress, improves memory, helps you sleep better, and boosts your overall mood. It can also combat loneliness. Why not join us and benefit from 2 coached and 3 member-led runs every week, meet like-minded people of all athletic abilities and make new friends. Don't be put off by the cost of membership as we have a confidential assisted membership scheme, details can be found on the junior or senior sections of the website. https://www.mentalhealth.org.uk/campaigns/mental-health-awareness-week
Virgin London Marathon Success
Harmeny had much to celebrate at the recent Virgin London Marathon. Firstly, we had 8 runners complete the course, 2 of whom had 'won' their places in the club ballot - well done to Kim Kenny and John Pringle, we hope you enjoyed the experience. All our members did well however two of our athletes performed exceptionally well in their respective age categories. Helena Mackay (75-79 ages) finished 3rd in her age group in a time of 4:55:32, which was a new PB Patricia Hampton (70-74 age group) was 4th in a time of 4:25:09, missing out on 3rd place by under 30 seconds. Well done to everyone who took part!
