CROSS COUNTRY IS COMING!
Track season is coming to an end but don't despair, it's almost cross country time!! For the benefit of our newer members, Harmeny compete in the East District League which comprise a series of three races. The dates are shown below. Age groups range from under 11's (must be 9 or over on the 31st August) to Seniors so most members of Harmeny are eligible to compete. If you are not sure which age category you should be competing in please ask your coach. Last year saw a large increase in cross country participation and it would be great to continue the trend this year. We also had some great performances over the age groups, topped off with our U11 boys winning the East District Trophy for the first time in the clubs history. The season kicks off with a friendly XC match against Corstorphine
Gobi Desert Crossing
As the most diversified course of the 4 Deserts Race Series combining a cooler weather mountain trail race and a hot desert race, The Gobi March in China is one of the world's most gruelling running races. Competitors must carry all the food and bedding they need over the seven days it takes to cross the 155 miles (250km) through a landscape of pastures, river beds, steep sand dunes and rough Gobi terrain. The temperatures get so hot during the day a Shanghai-based competitor died of heatstroke in the 2010 race. Edinburgh runner Donald Sandeman was the first pensioner to complete this year's race, coming 33rd overall. The 60-year-old suffered crippling heatstroke during temperatures that were well over 47C (118F) and had to have huge amounts of sand removed from the inside of his ears after enduring a night in a sand storm when his
The Inaugural Stirling Marathon – A Harmeny Affair
17 Harmeny runners (Ann, Gillian, Kim, Pat, Elaine, Carole, Nicky, Margaret, Dugald, Phil, David, Craig, Jon. Ian, Alan, Jonathan, and myself) lined up on the start line of the inaugural Stirling marathon. John and I got there early doors so weren’t caught up in the mayhem on the M9 at around 8am. I was soon despatched onto one of the shuttle buses and headed for the start at Blair Drummond Safari Park. There’s not many races where the only spectators at the start are giraffes!! The course itself was undulating, not any major climbs more long gentle inclines. Then you hit Stirling and those dreaded loops!!! Two and a half times round we went, every time you went under the gantry it would remind you that you had to go under the gantry three time! “If you were passing under for the first or second

Highland Fling Relay – Hunks on Tour
Saturday 29th April 04:40am and the alarm has reminded me its Fling day, now there's a mixture of excitement and what the hell am I doing up at this hour.... All four of us met at Hermiston park and ride all packed and ready to go, the trip through to Milngavie was a chance have a good blether, tactics was never on the cards, it was where can I get a cup of tea/coffee, breakfast sounds good. Eventually we made it to the start where the runners were gathering ready for the relay start briefing, Barry had opted for leg one, the so called “easy leg”, not sure it was that easy but it was very early to be up and blasting out on over 12 miles. Our navigator had gone and it was up to the rest of us to make our way to
Highland Fling
They say if you want to run, run a mile. If you want to experience a different life, run a marathon. If you want to talk to God, run an ultra. It was seven Harmenites this year, who took the Fling pilgrimage along the West Highland Way from Milngavie in Glasgow to Tyndrum on Saturday. Lead by Fling cover boy, Donald Sandeman, in full Scottish fancy dress, the club's prayers were answered with a prestigious haul of prizes and accolades. Lorna Broadhurst blessed the club with an almighty third place in the over 50s female category despite having cramp from Conic Hill onwards. Phenomenal. Record breaking runner, Norma Bone, smashed her time from last year to give her second place in the over 60s female category. The 65-year-old was later seen performing a mean set of Strip The Willow moves even her grandchildren would have
Forth Valley League, Match 1, Livingston
Saturday 29th April saw the track season start in earnest with the first of 3 Forth Valley League matches at Craigswood Sports Centre, Livingston. The response from our athletes has been superb and this year we have 2 separate teams competing in Divisions 2 and 3 respectively. Many of our new or younger athletes were competing for the very first time. Particular mention goes to Caragh McMaster, Ella Jones and Kieran Hardie who are all new to the club and performed admirably in the 800m with wins in each of their races. A special mention also goes out to Sophie Raymond who stepped up at late notice to compete in the U15 girls 1500m. This is not Sophie’s usual event but she managed to keep smiling all the way round. The final result sees Harmeny currently 5th overall in Division 2 and 4th overall in Division 3. The
First timer @ London 2017
When I entered the VLM ballot I thought what are the chances, all I wanted was to say I tried to get a space in London. To my shock on the 10/10/16 I got the call from my hubbie Ross to say I was in! I was granted a ballot space what had I done, I had only ran up to 10 miles to this point. Training started and I even tried track a couple of times and it was really good but I just didn't feel it was for me. I loved going out with the Friday gang but my legs just couldn't manage the Thursday night/Friday morning. I went for my first half marathon run with Kirsty and it was hard but felt so elated that I had managed it and it was at that point I thought if I can do that
April 23rd 2017 – A busy weekend at London, Blackpool, Edinburgh and Balmoral
The red and green tops from Harmeny were out in force at the London Marathon last weekend. 9 Harmeny runners took part while many other members eagerly tracked their progress on the online tracking system. Ross Millar was first to cross the finish line, missing a PB by only 1 min 20 seconds. He then rushed back along the course to support his wife Michelle who was taking part in her debut marathon. Their race reports can be viewed here on the website. Sandra Beattie had an amazing run and managed a PB by 10 minutes! Kirsty Stoddart made a fantastic comeback to running in her first marathon since 2013 and Nicola Freedman was back for another marathon after completing Boston the week before! Also taking part was Karen Davidson, Craig Stewart, Adrian White, Raymond Keith, Carol Fortune and Keith Martin. Finally Raymond decided fame was
London’s Calling (Ross Millar Remix)
London calling to the faraway clubs Now racing is declared, and runners come down London calling to the Strava segment believers Come off of the taper, you boys and girls London calling, now don't look to fail Phoney training plans have bitten the dust London calling, see Ross he ain't got no arm swing Look at the others ring that annoying cow bell thing The ice bath is coming, the sun's beating in The Wall is expected, the glycogen is growing thin Runners stop running, but I have no fear 'Cause London is buzzing, and I have on my Harmeny running gear London calling to the level 2 training zone Forget it, mate, you can’t run it alone London calling to the zombie runners of death Quit holding out, have a gel and some Lucozade, and draw another breath London calling, and I don't wanna
Podium places for Darren and Kirsty at the Kilomathon
For the first time this now well established race from Ocean Terminal to Murrayfield Stadium was included in the Club Grand Prix series, resulting in 16 members entering and running on the day, out of a field of more than 1100. An 830am start was unusually early, however, the sun was shining and whilst it was a little chilly, there was little wind, ensuring ideal running conditions for those taking part. Some club members took the opportunity to include the race as part of forthcoming marathon preparations in London, Stirling and Edinburgh. A 13.1km event though does produce the interesting conundrum of pacing – should you pace it as a 10k and hold on for dear life in the last couple of miles or take it more conservatively as a 10 miler or half marathon and then push harder in the closing stages? A challenging
Edinburgh 10 Mile Race
This is the second year that we have ran this race as a group (The Friday morning group) . It is a little bit hilly in places, but it takes part in the city centre. Taking part again this year in the group run were Eve Atkinson Worden, Gail Bruce, Shirley Rutherford, May Sharp, Hellen Tollitt and Myself. We were missing the Lovely Michelle Millar this year, but as London Marathon fell on the same day Michelle was off taking on a much bigger challenge. Also, roped into this year’s group run we had Gail Peterson, Graham Harper and Tracy Manson. The sun was shining, but it was still a bit chilly when we all met up before the start under the letter H for Harmeny. This was also a chance to wish other runner from Harmeny good luck as they would be running for
EPSSA Cross Country
It was great to see so many Harmeny members at the annual Edinburgh Primary Schools Cross Country event at Cavalry Park, Duddingston on 20th March 2017. This clipping from the Edinburgh Evening News shows Emma, Ethan and Finlay who were all in the top 3 of their event but misses Alasdair who came in 8th in the Primary 7 race. Well done to all who competed.
Gartmorn 6 Race – 12th March 2017
Further success this weekend for our young Harmeny athletes with first place positions going to Matthew Holden and Ellia Jones in the annual Gartmorn 6 race. This is a 2 mile trail race hosted by the Wee County Harriers based in Alloa. This year saw over 70 entrants take on the scenic route close to Gartmorn reservoir and both Matthew and Ellia came first in the age 10 category. Well done to you both!
Finlay breaks Scottish record
Finlay Ross continued his impressive collection of medals, competing for the first time at Under13 level in the National Indoor Championships 800m at the impressive Emirates Arena. This time it was gold following a dominant performance, leading the race from the start and pacing himself brilliantly to a NEW SCOTTISH AGE GROUP RECORD of 2.19.89. Well done Finlay, brilliant performance! Details and results can be found here: http://events.scottishathletics.org.uk/events/19136-17208-scottishathletics-national-indoor-u13-championships
U12 Indoor SUPERteams
Sunday 5th February saw the bi-annual SUPERteams competition at the Emirates Stadium in Glasgow. We had a brilliant response from our under 12’s so we applied for 8 teams but were disappointed to only be able to take two boys and two girls teams. There were more than 400 children from clubs all over Scotland and the atmosphere was electric. Each team member competes in four events - shotputt, long jump, 60m sprint and 200m relays. All our athletes performed well and we were delighted to come away with a silver medal for one of the boys teams. Thanks to the coaches for preparing the children for the various events and to the parents for making the journey and cheering all day, once again the Harmeny crowd did us proud! East District XC – Final Leg, Broxburn
It was a glorious sunny day for the final leg of the East District XC League and we had a record 29 young runners turn up to take on ‘The Notorious Puddle.’ Unfortunately due to the lack of rain it had dried up – this was a slight disappointment to the youngsters (but not to the adults in the later races!) Not to be deterred thirteen u11 girls set out first to tackle the mile course. It was a lovely route, undulating through the woods and trails but with patches of ice and snow where those with spikes had an advantage. All made it round in one piece and came in 11th team overall, a great result. Next up were the u11 boys. The team were lying in third place after the first two rounds so all wanted to put on a good
7 Reservoirs Results
Message from the Race Organisers What an amazing day we had for this years 7R. Weather conditions were absolutely perfect with sunshine, blue sky and almost no breeze. The conditions underfoot were firm without being too slippy and all in all we couldn't have asked for anything better for running. Congratulations to all 95 runners who started (and finished!) the race - that's right, we had no DNFs this year! The race this year was won by Mark Thorton-Smith of Edinburgh AC in a time of 1 hour 25 mins 30 secs, and in 2nd place a little over 4 minutes behind was Michael Stratford. First lady home was Gillian Carr of Corstorphine AAC in a time of 1:40:10 and in second place was Elizabeth Richardson Results were as follows. 1st Male Mark Thorton-Smith (Edinburgh AC) 1:25:30 2nd Male Michael Stratford (Unattached) 1:29:56 3rd Male

2nd Leg East District XC, Alloa
20 juniors and 12 adults braved the cool conditions on the second leg of the East District Cross Country League. Alloa is a tough hilly course however it was great to see the enthusiasm from all our juniors who tackled it very well. Every athlete who competes makes an important contribution to the team and I’m pleased to report that our U11 boys are sitting at 3rd in the Season Team Totals. If we get another good turnout in Broxburn there’s no reason why we can’t even improve our position! The adult teams all seemed to enjoy the outing, and the obligatory post-race debrief in the pub afterwards. If you’re a member of Harmeny and Scottish Athletics why don’t you come and join us for the last leg of the league in Broxburn on 14th January 2017?
Lasswade 35th Annual Cross Country Race
For the second year in a row it was a lovely day for Lasswade AC’s 35th Annual Cross Country Event. A large turnout over all the age categories ensured an exciting day for the 4 Harmeny runners who attended. The under 11 boys had 2 runners, Finlay and Fergus Ross with Finlay taking the trophy at the second time of asking and Fergus coming a commendable 30th in a field of 56 runners. Ruby Grierson showed real spirit to take 26th place in the girls u13 category, overtaking other girls right to the end for a strong finish. Tendai Nyabadza came a superb third place in the boys under 13 race behind two much more experienced runners. It was a gritty performance and he was rightly delighted with his trophy. There was a real buzz about the day and from the post-race chat it didn’t
Jedburgh Race Reports
A fantastic turnout, great conditions and the bonus of a few pots won made for a fantastic weekend at the recent Jedburgh Ultra and Running Festival. Damien O’Looney takes pride of place for his outstanding 2nd place finish in the 38-mile Ultra - all the more remarkable given the fact this was his first race beyond the 26-mile marathon distance. And with a strong finish, who knows what might have been had the race been just a few miles longer! There were outstanding PBs for a number of people (Graeme Stewart, Karl Zeiner) and great performances by first timer Paul Campbell. The male and female relay teams went one better, comfortably picking up first place in both events – next year we need to find a mixed team to pick up all 3! Well done to Andy Ross, Gavin Orr, Phil Buckley and Craig Stewart
East District XC – Mud and Mayhem!
The weather forecasted rain, rain and more rain for the first leg of the East District cross country league in the grounds of Stirling University but this didn’t deter 17 junior and 14 senior Harmeny members from turning out to enjoy the fun. There was a fantastic atmosphere in the tent where names were ticked, bibs handed out and nerves soothed. The races started with the U11 girls – one of whom had to run full pelt from her mums car straight to the start line. The published results are incorrect and pending correction should have the team in 7th position, a great achievement. The U11 boys mustered an impressive field of 8 runners and came third in their own team competition – our best result in the recent years. Well done to Ruby in the U13 Girls race. It would be great if we
Harmeny Truimph!!
A beautiful sunny day provided the backdrop for the annual Harmeny AC v CAAC cross country match. 61 young athletes turned out to contest the trophy which had been won by Corstorphine at the 3 previous meetings. We were delighted to welcome so many new runners to the event, the new sessions are clearly a great success with 35 entrants for the under 11’s race. It was great to see everyone enjoy themselves and there was even some sibling rivalry with Sebastian beating his older sister Stella! To cap off the day the individual trophies were presented by local MP Joanna Cherry. She was present for all the races and was very impressed with all the performances. And the news you’ve all been waiting for… YES Harmeny did come away with the overall trophy. Well done everyone. This event marks the start of the XC
