After a great response Harmeny AC travelled to the Emirates Arena in Glasgow with a total of 24 junior athletes in 3 teams for the boys and the girls, this was despite it being at half term. It was a fantastic opportunity for the youngsters to compete in world class facilities against aspiring athletes from all over Scotland.

There was a total of 242 girls and 195 boys competing on the day. As the scoring system gives 100 points to the winner 99 to 2nd etc scoring points was going to be difficult.

Everyone involved put in a great effort, the parents who brought their kids along and gave tremendous support throughout the day, the parents that got roped in to looking after a team on the day, the coaches and especially the athletes themselves.

The action came thick and fast with the events, 60m or 4x200m, Long Jump and Shot Put all going on at the same time. It was great seeing the kids putting in spectacular efforts in all their events. I think the race that sticks in most spectator’s minds was the Harmeny Boys A in the 4x 200m relay. Some great running from the squad left them in the lead with a lap remaining. We managed to hold off the runner behind us all the way then on the final straight this other kid comes from nowhere and surges through falling over the line to push our boys into 2nd in that race by 0.05 seconds.

All the athletes without exception put in their best efforts. With what was a young squad, the majority will be able to compete again next year and I’m sure they’ll be looking to better their performances.

As mentioned previously scoring points was difficult with less than half of the girls scoring points in each event. There were some particularly notable achievements during the day.

The highest points scoring individual of the day for Harmeny was Ben MacDonald who scored a total of 178.5 points followed by Devlin Cunningham who scored 164.5 points, these were the only athletes to score in all 3 individual events. For the girls Ella Jones scored 131.5 points and Esther Taylor scored 113 points.

The top performances by points scored were as follows:

Esther Taylor – Shot – 5.36m 10th 91 points

Boys A – Relay – 2:13.2 26th 75 points

Ben MacDonald – Shot – 5.16m 28th 73 points

Ella Jones – 60m – 9.61 30th 70.5 points

Devlin Cunningham – 60m – 9.50 31st 69.5 points

Orla MacInnes – Shot – 4.60m 34th 66.5 points

Fraser Cole – Shot – 5.02m 37th 65 points

Ella Jones – Long Jump – 3.25m 41st 61 points

Ben MacDonald – Long Jump – 3.32m 40th 60.5 points

Cameron Weir – 60m – 9.61 – 41st 60 points

Devlin Cunningham – Shot – 4.81m 51st 50 points

Who knew we had so many good shot putters!

As previously mentioned points scoring was tough, many of our athletes, especially the younger ones didn’t score any points. Does that matter? No it doesn’t, everyone had a fantastic time. The athletes were a credit to the club, their parents and the coaching team.

We look forward to having many more fun and exciting events in the future.

Well Done Everyone!
